IPPB Launch of SHG Savings Accounts for Rural Empowerment

 New Delhi, April 30, 2026: India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), a Government of India-owned entity under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, has announced the launch of itself Help Group (SHG) Savings Account. The initiative aims to expand financial inclusion and empower women-led SHGs across rural India.



Announcing the launch, IPPB MD & CEO R. Viswesvaran said the bank is committed to making banking simple, accessible, and inclusive for every citizen. He noted that the SHG Savings Account is designed to strengthen women-led groups by offering a reliable, low-cost banking solution supported by doorstep services and digital infrastructure.

Self Help Groups have long played a key role in rural economic development, closely aligned with initiatives like the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and programs supported by NABARD. IPPB plans to leverage its vast postal network and digital capabilities to deepen financial access through assisted onboarding and doorstep banking services provided by postmen and Gramin Dak Sevaks.

Key Highlights of the SHG Savings Account:

  • Zero balance requirement with no account opening charges
  • No Monthly Average Balance (MAB) requirement
  • Maximum balance limit of ₹2 lakh
  • Quarterly interest payouts as per applicable rates
  • No charges on cash deposits and withdrawals
  • One free physical account statement per month
  • No account closure fees
  • No QR card issuance charges

The account is designed to be fully digital, enabling easy onboarding and access through IPPB’s technology-enabled platform. It is delivered through a network of approximately 1.65 lakh post offices, including 1.4 lakh in rural areas, supported by over 3 lakh postal employees.

IPPB stated that its operating model is built on the pillars of India Stack, enabling paperless, cashless, and presence-less banking at customers’ doorsteps via biometric-enabled smartphones. The bank currently serves over 13 crore customers across more than 5.5 lakh villages and towns, offering services in 13 languages.

The SHG Savings Account is expected to play a vital role in promoting sustainable livelihoods, improving financial literacy, and integrating rural communities into the formal financial ecosystem.
